How to Swag Curtains

Dress up your windows with stunning curtain swags

Curtain swags are an easy way to add a touch of beauty and elegance to any window. 

When dressing your windows with curtain swags, there are many style combinations available to choose from but the key to creating a professional result every time is knowing how to hang a curtain swag properly.

Swag curtains DIY 

Swag curtains are created by using a fabric that flows well as it is draped loosely over a drapery rod or other drapery hardware such as crowns, scrolls or holdbacks.

The material can be sheer or you can create different looks by incorporating different fabrics, colors or lengths. An extra valance or set of blinds can be added to the window beneath the swag curtain for extra privacy.

Steve: When it comes to swaging the fabrics, how to old them in place is always the question. This is one of the reasons why all of our packages come with zip locks. Zip locks seem to make things really quite easy. Once you have gathered everything up all you have to do is wrap a zip lock around it, and then just slip it over the arm. Now that I have made the swag curtains all I need to do is simply add another zip lock, create a loop between the two, and once I have done so all I do is just rest it on my holdback.

 {Anat} Welcome to another episode of Galaxy-Design’s innovative design series. We are here in Lake Forrest, CA.

{Anat}  Welcome to another episode of Galaxy-Design’s innovative design series.  We are here in Lake Forrest, CA. 

{Steve}  Today we are going to be working on some windows behind us that we haven’t done before.  These windows are very large, they have a beautiful view and the client has requested for us to dress them.

So we are going to put up some of our Zodiac Valances and scarf swags which are all part of our custom do it yourself drapes packages.

We are also going to have some scrolls in this window treatment and I’m excited to show you how to install these window dressings up step-by-step.

Since we have shades on these windows, we have gone ahead and used our 5.5 inch arms that we put on the Zodiac valance that will allow us enough clearance for the drapes. 

Using our patented technology with the wire, we have gone ahead and slipped the fabrics onto the wire and the next thing we are going to do is slip these onto the nuts that are on the back of the Zodiacs and this will allow us to have full draperies put up.

{Anat}  So now that we put the panel on the Zodiac crown, we are going to go ahead and secure it.  Here is the nut that is going to go on the screw.  We are going to go ahead and screw it on this way.

{Steve}  So this is what they look like going up.  They are going to look really stunning once they are put up.  Now that I’ve got the fabrics put on the valances, I chose to go ahead and do the swags first as a first layer and then the drapes as a second layer.

So all I do is simply pull on the pleats and make sure they are gathered evenly before putting them up onto the arms on the top.

So in this particular job we had a little challenge to deal with in how we put the holdbacks up.  So we made these special holdbacks that will allow these holdbacks to still dress the windows in the front.  This is an item that we make ourselves and it is fashioned into an L-shape so that the holdback will fit into this window space that is very close to the wall.

I am going to go ahead and put these up.  Drapery holdbacks are usually mounted about 48 inches from the floor. 

This window behind me has no space from the wall whatsoever.  What’s unique about this particular Galaxy-Design product is that it can go literally right up against the wall. 

So for the scroll installment what I like to do is use two measurements that are ten inches in difference.  The first measurement I am going to do is going to be at 92 inches.  And the second measurement is going to be about ten inches into the window and it will be at 102 inches.

As you can see, our drapery hardware can go all the way up against the wall leaving only a one inch gap.

For this particular demonstration I have chosen to go ahead and put our holdback at the same level as the scroll.  By doing this it allows me to have a straight top on the swags to they look very level.  It has also covered the edge of the window.  That is the reason why we like to put the holdbacks right at the edge of the window.

When it comes to swaging the fabrics, how to hold them in place is always a question.  This is why all of our do-it-yourself drapery packages come with zip-locks.

Zip-locks seem to make this process quite easy.  Once you have gathered all of the fabric together all you need to do as wrap a zip-lock around it and then simply slip it over the arm.

Now that I have made the swags all I have to do is simply add another zip-lock, create a loop between the two and once I have done so all I do is rest it on my holdback.

Now that I have them done, both swags are meeting, I have a nice jabot in the center and all I do is simply slip the holdback into place and that will cover all the zip-locks so you won’t see any of them.

We have now completed putting up all of the hardware and the scarfs are up so now it’s time to put the finishing touches on this project.  

I always like to have the drapes steamed out.  This allows the drapes to relax and give us a nice dressing on the end. 

So we just completed the job and it turned out really nice and very exquisite.  The client seemed to like it very much.

{Steve} Today we have just completed Mr. and Mrs. Nyger’s home. I have chosen to go with this treatment for them.

They were planning on having just swags and cascades put on however I decided to go ahead and do this look for them and I think it turned out quite nicely.

Adding the tassel in the center really made a huge difference. And the swags were done right here at the customer’s home. This is one of our do it yourself drapes packages that can be done in your own home without the participation of a designer.

This custom window treatment was very simple to install and the customer seems to be very pleased with it.

Galaxy-Design I know from a long time ago like about 10-12 years ago I was Steve’s customer and I was enjoying his work.  This is the time that I needed to change for new curtains so right now the only place that I was thinking of was Expression Décor. 

So I didn’t even go anywhere else, I just went straight to him.  I imagined something about how I wanted my room to become and it became more than I was imagining actually.

He was very helpful, he came to my home with a lot of designs and a lot of colors and materials with him.

And right now you can see that my home became very beautiful.  Very nice and cheerful and elegant.

All my family and friends are very happy to see the work that I did and they are going to go to him also when the time comes. 

I can recommend to anyone Galaxy-Design because they are the only one that I can recommend to anybody. 

As time goes by and maybe in the future if I need to change the whole thing again I’m going to go back there again for sure, 100%.

{Mallie} Welcome to another episode of do-it-yourself presented by Galaxy-Design.   I’m Mallie Messri, a realtor that specializes in residential home sales in the West Los Angeles area and today I’m here with Steve our top designer.

{Steve} Thank you Mallie.  We are going to go ahead and demonstrate today how to put up one of our two-piece DIY French Scroll combos. 

{Mallie}  These DIY window treatments are very stylish, innovative and tasteful.  And they are designed to dress your windows, not to cover them.  They are very easy to install and today we are going to show you just how to do that.

{Steve}  These do-it-yourself combo packages include one of our luxurious velvet draperies that are layered with a fine lining on the back.  You will also receive one of our French Scrolls that has our innovative design patent on the back of the drapery hardware. 

You will also get one of our elegant hold backs that we call our large medallion drapery hold back.  You will get the mounting bracket for the scrolls as well as the holdbacks along with the extension screw which allows you to have more than one layer of window treatments installed beneath these.  You will get color coordinated screws,  a genuine Swarovski label, as well as wonderful beautiful sketches showing all of the different design ideas you can create with this package in the future.

The DIY drapery hardware we are showing you today is embellished with Swarovski crystal elements however you may also chose to select them in broad array of custom crafted colors that you can view on our website.

These luxurious drapery panels are available in 96 inch and 120 inch finish lengths.  If you have a window that is 84 inches high, a 96 inch drapery panel would be suitable for that type of window.  If you choose to go ahead and order your own finish length, you can go ahead and visit our website to view our frequently asked questions section with will explain all the details on how to go about ordering those panels.

{Mallie}  In order to install the drapes, you will need three simple items:

1.       A drill, preferable with a hex gun drill head tip

2.       A Philips screwdriver

3.       A tape measure

{Steve} I have asked our co-designer Mallie to go ahead and show you how easy it is to put these up.  So we are going to start with our very first bracket which is called the bottom bracket of the scroll which is mounted from 4 to 6 inches away from the top corner of the window. 

Now that we have mounted the bottom bracket of the scroll, we are now going to go ahead and mount the top bracket of the scroll which is located 10 inches above the window in an angled position. 

The brackets are usually mounted 48 inches above the floor. 

{Mallie}  Our patented wire design allows easy installation of our exquisite DIY drapery panels.  To begin, simply remove the nuts on the back of the scroll and pull out the wire.  Our exquisite ready to install drapes come with a pocket already sewn in.  So all you have to do is simply slide the wire through and gather the drapery fabric to the top of the wire. 

So now that I’ve got the drape on to my patented drapery hardware wire, I’m going to place it on the back of the scroll  and take the nuts that I removed from before and screw them back on and tighten them into place.

The next step is to take your bracket and your Philips screwdriver and loosen the screw so that the extension screw comes out.  Then place it onto the back of the drapery scroll and tighten it then do the same with the other one.

OK, so now I have put everything onto the back of the scroll and mounted all of the screws.  This is what it looks like when it is done and the drapery fabric is attached and it looks great.  You might want to go ahead and adjust it a little bit so it looks nice and even and this is ready to be put up.

So now I’m ready to go ahead and mount the drapery hardware scroll onto the brackets.  I left the brackets a little loose and I will go ahead and tighten them later.  You now just go ahead and take them and slip them into the brackets and push it back.  And it’s is simple as that.

So now my drapes are up and I’m going to go ahead and create a drop.  I will show you how to do that.   You simply grab each pleat with your hand and move your hand upward.  Then you take the fabric and place it behind the drapery holdback.  Now you are going to want to organize it a little bit so it looks in order.  And that will create an amazing drop for the curtains.
